今日の日本語の言葉: te (手) - hand
This word has been brought to you by what I've been thinking about all day, which is hands, hands, hands. You'll see why.
Today, I woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head—well, it really was a brush, but who's keeping track? That's right! It's Beatles Time! I've been listening to the Beatles all day because the mood has struck me, and I've realized that I actually know a lot more lyrics than I thought I did. In fact, I know all of Paperback Writer (which is one of my favorite pieces), which made me quite happy when I realized it. :3
When I got on the train this morning, it was practically empty. I had a whole row of seats to myself, and this is the Yamanote we're talking about; the central line. This has never happened to me before, and somehow, I have a feeling it won't happen to me again. Maybe it's because I went to school earlier today for the workshop, or maybe it's because people just weren't going in that direction that day or something, but that train was empty. It was such a cool thing to see.
I totally miscalculated time and got there about forty minutes earlier than I had intended (better than being forty minutes late, at least, right?). Luckily, I ran right into Saya-san, and we were able to hang out together a bit in the lounge before heading off to the workshop. Saya got a new boyfriend (as of yesterday), and he is like the dream dude: already a pretty savvy and successful banker at the age of twenty-six, lives in Shinjuku in a nice apartment (that's like living in a nice apartment in Manhattan), shy enough to be adorable, very much a gentleman, and incredibly handsome to boot. Of course, he doesn't compare to Aaron, but no one does. I'm just very happy for her, and she wouldn't stop talking about him, so I guess she's happy too. It's been awkward because sometimes we talk about my life, and then Aaron gets mentioned in there somewhere, and she falls silent because she's been single for a while. Thus, it's no longer awkward now, so thank god.
Oh, and apple juice comes in a carton. Does that rock anyone's world aside from mine? Have you seen this before? Apparently, that's how the Swedish do it too, so Saya wasn't the least bit impressed, but to me, this is revolutionary. Yogurt comes in cartons too. o.o
They have this scale sitting in front of the trash cans in the lounge, which is really the only place in the building you can go to eat. So is that scale there to pressure students into not eating too much or something? Like the watchful eye that makes you feel guilty for consuming that extra onigiri? If that were the case, that is just too funny. xD
After chatting it up and trying our best to study (though honestly, nothing got done in the wake of exciting boyfriend news), we went to chair making class! They gave us pre-cut pieces of balsa wood and schematics for one of Gerrit Rietveld's incredibly modern chairs. Rietveld is a Dutch architect probably most famous for the "red and blue chair" and his weird modern house designed after the ideas of the Dutch De Stijl art movement.
Anyways, history/art lesson aside, making the chair was actually pretty fun. All the pieces lined up in a certain way where everything had to be done to an exact precision in order to stand up well. Since there were lots of straight lines, you could tell immediately if you were wrong, since the long lines would slant a little as they went on. We were using super glue too, so if you messed up, you either ripped the two pieces apart and tried again, or just left it as it was. I'm proud to say that I never took pieces apart, and all my pieces looked pretty damn straight to me. There's a good side to having my father's genes for precision OCD.
I felt pretty proud as well of being the first to finish. Today is just a day of pride, I think. I woke up early, was productive, started writing my next fic, got to school early and managed to decently talk my way through "girl talk" (which I'm not a natural at), finished my chair first, and managed to draw a hand. You'll see. That hand is special.

We've discovered that it's a good cell phone holder. |
Class was pretty normal, neither bad nor good. I got so many emails in class though, from various readers who were sad to see my fic finished, but glad that the ending was to their satisfaction—which made me so happy! Yet another point for pride (not that my overly inflated ego needs any more of it). This day has just been a good day all around.
Anyways, onto hands. I've been trying to draw one of the two promised stations today, but since I'm trying to draw them together in their natural element, it's a bit tougher than I thought. Don't mind the suit in the following picture; it's not close to done yet, and there still isn't action flow to the clothing yet. I'll get there. The nose and hair is off too, but that's also temporary. What's important is that hand. Yeah, some of you who can draw (*cough*Anna*cough*) may scoff at such a hand, but it's like, the best and hardest hand I've ever drawn. Holy cow. You wouldn't think that such a hand position would be hard until you tried it (and even then it could be easy for some of you anyways), but I am so proud of it. Best thing I've done all day (and I just finished it before writing this blog post). I've still got three more hands to go in this picture though, at least, so hopefully things get even better from here.
See you on the morrow!
