This word has been brought to you by today's class topic.
This is going to be a relatively short blog post just because I think I'm sick, and thus I want to get some rest and hopefully get better faster.
This morning, I had my first bento! Isn't it just so cute? There's furikake (rice seasoning), rice, half a hard boiled egg, grapes, cheese, and mixed vegetables stir fried with imitation crab. Yoshiko-san made it for me; she is such a nice person.
So after eating breakfast, I hung around for a bit, and then went off to school after Skyping with Anna (I always love it when you guys have time in your busy lives to Skype me). I ate lunch sitting at a bench near the station waiting for Julien, but after a while, the smells escaping from Vie de France could no longer be resisted. Below is a shot of one of the shelves at Vie de France. This one has some of my favorite Japanese pastries, like curry bread and melon pan.
I got some curry bread and sat down immediately to eat it. It was delicious (as was the bento, which I devoured very quickly and vigorously). Why can't curry pan be a healthy thing, huh? I just love Japanese curry so much. TT^TT
After I met up with Julien, I then went with him to get some lunch, since he hadn't had anything to eat. Ian was striking out on his own and having lunch somewhere near his house, so we didn't meet up. I actually didn't end up seeing him until the brief moment we passed each other after school.
We went to Yoshinoya, which is a chain of fast restaurants which sell beef and chicken rice bowls for ridiculously cheap prices. It was quite delicious, and since it was so crowded, I felt compelled to order a small miso soup just because I was taking up precious seating space. It'll definitely be a place I'll come back to if I ever eat out in Akihabara again.
Class was very interesting today. We learned about how to order food, and what to say. We also learned about what to say as waiters and servers as well, so now I'm probably qualified to work at Mc Donald's (Maku Donarudo) if I wanted to.
Other than that, I was still bored, but I'm gradually getting more and more into it. We're learning things that I don't know (like what to say if I ever work as a waiter), so at least I have some new things to catch on to. We're also learning survival kanji, which is basically recognizing necessary kanji, though not necessarily knowing how to write it. That I found pretty interesting (and difficult, since kanji look so similar, and there might be only the slightest difference between one and the other).

When I went shopping, I had meant to just get some furikake for my rice, but then ended up getting some Halloween Japanese candy as well, and some Panda Pocky (which is cookies and cream), since I've never had that before. I did see the sweetened condensed milk ice cream, which I was very tempted to get, but knew that it would probably make me five pounds fatter.
For dinner, we had sama, which is a type of fish. She just roasted up the whole thing, chopped it in half, and gave me the tail end (which had less innards, because I wasn't sure that I could eat the innards; I didn't come home prepared for that). It was actually quite delicious (I didn't eat the stomach and stuff; as I said, not prepared). In addition, we had tofu miso soup and... this thing. I don't know what it's officially called, but it's like fish cake wrapped around some cucumber. It's actually quite delicious as well! Wow, I've used the word "delicious" a lot in this paragraph. o.o
That's all for now! I think I'm getting much closer to everyone else, now that I'm starting to understand more and more Japanese. I managed to make Masahiro-san laugh twice, which is very much an accomplishment, considering that he doesn't speak an ounce of English. Whenever they speak to each other at home now, I tend to understand what they're saying too. I just can't speak as fast as they can back to them, which is I find the hardest part of living in Japan right now. Understanding comes a lot easier than talking.
Hope you guys are enjoying life as much as I am!
Maggie
